Moon smell
This article on NASA's website says that several astronauts have claimed and confirmed something interesting:  Moondust smells and tastes like gun powder.  They noticed it when it was brought into their lunar lander on the boots of their spacesuits.  But moondust and gun powder aren't the same thing.  Gunpowder is made up of nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin.  Moondust is silicon dioxide glass, olivine, and pyroxene, among other things.  Scientists are unsure why it smells the same as gun powder.  (via Boing Boing) #technology

Wind-powered animals
This site is kind of hard to explain.  It contains pictures and videos of a bunch of wind-powered animals that a guy named Theo Jansen created.  They're not real animals; they're pieces of plastic tubing linked together to form moving parts and joints.  And when they're placed in a windy area like the beach, they move on their own.  One of the creatures is called the Animaris Rhinoceros Transport, which is a giant 15-foot-tall, 2-ton creature that moves when pulled by a person or other moving object.  Really weird but amazing stuff.  (via Neatorama) #nature

Weird crochet
Crocheting sounds like something old people do.  But Wendy does it too, so apparently it's "hip".  Anyway, this website has a bunch of pictures of weird crocheted masterpieces.  Most of them contain blood (not real blood; red yarn).  The unicorn one is pretty funny.  I never did trust unicorns.  (via Boing Boing) #technology

Bellagio fountains
This article from the IEEE geek magazine talks about a guy who designs the fountains for the Bellagio in Las Vegas.  His initial task was to double the height of the spray to 160 feet, which causes problems with the FAA because they say it shows up on their radar.  How awesome is that?  (via Boing Boing).  Here's my picture from January, 2005.
