Categories page

Going to a category (/category/rant/) produced a 404 error. I renamed the page slug of my "category" page to "categories" and that fixed it. I'll try it on a localhost installation of WordPress 1.5, and I might report this as a bug if I can figure out how to do that. #technology

Deaf

This article on the PBS website talks about Gallaudet University in Washington, DC, which is a school largely populated by deaf people. Their reaction to cochlear implants (a device that is implanted in the head behind the ear that sends electrical signals to the auditory nerve, allowing hearing for deaf people) is pretty surprising: They don't want them. They like being deaf. One guy said, "Would it be easier? Yeah. I'm not going to lie, it would. But if I were able to hear and speak, I wouldn't be deaf anymore. That means my identity would be gone, and I'd be a completely different person, and I don't want that." A lady said, "I wish hearing people would understand that I am very happy to be deaf. My deafness is not an issue. I don't think about it every day. I just go on with my life the same way hearing people do. I'm successful. I'm educated. I work. I have a family. I have a home. It just happens that I sign and I have some equipment that helps me to get access to information. What's all the fuss about?" I never knew that.
On a lighter note, I might want to try hanging out with some deaf people and maybe attending this school. Just think about how quiet it would be. #technology
