It's claimed that Yuri Gagarin, the first human in space, packed shark repellent with him on his historic voyage. Not for space sharks with lasers, as Boing Boing commenters suggest, but for his possible landing in the ocean. #science

	I've also heard that, even though it is against some treaty or something, the Russians keep a shotgun on their soyuz spacecraft for protection after some mission landed in the wrong place and the cosmonauts wound up getting eaten by wolves.

	I heard it was a handgun. Some quick and lucky Googling found it was a TP-82, a triple-barreled pistol with a machete in the handle. Wow.
