The following words do not contain the letter "R", contrary to popular usage:
- Oil
- Wash
- Alpha/delta (no offense, Asians)
I'm taking a class where the professor mentions Euler angles on a regular basis. I've heard it pronounced "oiler" and "yooler" but haven't heard a definitive answer as to which is correct. But one thing I know for sure is that "erler", which is how the professor says it, is 100% wrong.
I find it frighteningly odd that two people would mention Euler twice within 24 hours. What should I surmise? (Of course the other person who mentioned him was talking about his faith).
While we're on the subject, please let those around you know that when a 't' follows directly behind an 'n' it is NOT silent. :-)
Can you give an example?
Ask some of your locals how to pronounce Boonton and see if you hear a "t."
I personally pronounce that incorrectly because it takes too much effort. But I pretend it has no first "n", as in Booton, which rhymes with Newton. And that "on" is more like an apostrophe "n", as in "Boot'n". Oh well, I don't live there.
Let me add the following to my original list:
